Often times clients seek out medication to help alleviate their mental health symptoms but it's important to understand that medication works best when it is in conjunction with therapy. Sometimes medication is needed so that therapy is more effective in addressing your symptoms. Sometimes therapy is needed so that medication can have an optimal effect. Many antidepressants take up to 4-6 weeks to reach maximum benefit and during that timeframe therapy can aid in introducing coping skills and grounding techniques. Therapy allows for a safe space to explore your feelings and have your experiences validated. Medication can treat underlying imbalances of neurotransmitters in your brain so that you can be in the best position to receive therapy. Both therapy and medication are supportive measures for your mental health well-being and they complement each other to help you function better in your everyday life.
