Frequently Asked Questions

1. If I start medications, do I have to stay on them forever?

No, it is entirely up to you how long you stay on a medication. I will offer my recommendation and explain the risks and benefits, but I give you full autonomy in deciding when you want to start and stop taking medication. I do ask that you let me know so that I can help you taper off of them rather than stopping them abruptly—this helps to mitigate withdrawal symptoms.

2. What makes your approach different?

I value having you as part of your treatment plan rather than believing that I have all of the answers. You are the expert on your own experience, and I care about the input that you are able to provide so that we can find the best path forward together.

3. What if I am unhappy with something that you said or did?

Feedback is important to me, and my goal is to listen empathetically and have an honest conversation so that you feel heard and respected. Open communication is an important part of treatment.

4. What happens if I miss multiple appointments?

If you miss three consecutive appointments without canceling in advance, you will be administratively discharged from the practice. In that event, I will provide you with local resources and options to help you connect with another provider.

5. What if I have questions or concerns between our appointments?

If a brief question arises between appointments, you can send a message through the patient portal. Messages are reviewed during regular business hours, and I typically respond within 1–2 business days.

Because clinical decisions require thoughtful discussion, in-depth concerns will be saved for your next scheduled visit, or I will add you to my schedule as soon as possible.

Please note: Portal messages are not monitored for urgent or emergency situations. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, please call or text 988, or go to the nearest emergency room.

6. What if I need disability paperwork completed?

I do not fill out disability forms unless you have been a patient for at least six months. This is to ensure that I have adequate clinical data to accurately complete the forms.

7. Will you talk with my therapist to coordinate my care?

With a signed release of information, I am happy to speak with your therapist to coordinate your care.

8. What if I miss a visit but need a refill on my medication?

Medication refills are managed during scheduled appointments to ensure your regimen remains safe and effective. To avoid running out of medication, please request refills during your visits. If an out-of-visit refill request is necessary, a $50 fee will apply to cover the clinical time required to review your chart and assess safety. Depending on how long it has been since your last visit, an appointment may be required before a refill can be authorized.

9. Do you prescribe benzodiazepines long-term?

I generally prescribe benzodiazepines only on a short-term basis, typically for 4–6 weeks. Over time, your body can develop tolerance to these medications, making them less effective. They also carry risks including dependence, withdrawal symptoms, falls, impaired coordination, and memory difficulties. My goal is to help you find effective long-term treatment options that address anxiety without relying on medications that carry these risks.
